What Does the Flag Look Like?

The flag of Colorado Springs is mostly white. It has a blue border along the top, bottom, and the side that flies in the wind. In the center of the white part, there is a diamond-shaped design. This design shows a golden sun setting behind mountains.

The Story Behind the Flag

The idea for the Colorado Springs flag came about in 1912. A woman named Caroline Spencer, who was part of a group called the Civic League, presented the flag to the Colorado Springs city council. The city council is a group of elected officials who help run the city. They liked the design, and it became the official flag.

What Do the Colors and Symbols Mean?

Every part of the flag has a special meaning for the city:

  • The white background stands for how clean and healthy the city is.
  • The blue borders represent the beautiful blue skies over Colorado Springs.
  • The golden sun in the middle shows how proud the city is of its sunny weather.
  • The mountains in the design represent Pikes Peak, a famous mountain near the city.
  • The gold shapes on the mountains remind us of the city's history with mining.
  • A green band around the central design represents all the parks and green spaces surrounding Colorado Springs.

How Good is the Flag?

In 2004, a group called the North American Vexillological Association (which studies flags) reviewed 150 city flags in the United States. The Colorado Springs city flag was ranked as the nineteenth best! This shows that many people think it's a well-designed and meaningful flag.
