Designed by Mayor Youth Council

The flag of Lafayette, Indiana, is a special symbol for the city. It was officially chosen on April 9, 2007. A group of young people, called the Mayor Youth Council, helped design it. They spent months learning about flag design and Lafayette's history. After they finished their design, the City Council approved it. The flag was first shown to the public on June 14, 2007, at a concert in Riehle Plaza.

What Does the Lafayette Flag Mean?

The flag of Lafayette uses four main colors: red, white, blue, and gold. These colors show that Lafayette is part of both the state of Indiana and the United States. Each part of the flag has a special meaning.

Red Triangles

The flag has red triangles. These triangles represent a few things:

  • The hard work and sacrifices of the first settlers who built the city.
  • The idea of stability and balance in the community.
  • The mathematical symbol for "delta," which often means change or difference.

Blue Line

A blue line crosses the flag. This line stands for the Wabash River. The river was very important for Lafayette's economy in the past. It helped the city grow by allowing goods to be transported easily.

Gold Star

A bright gold star is also on the flag. The gold color represents awards given to Lafayette. It also stands for the color of corn, which is a major crop grown in the area. The star itself reminds people of Lafayette's old nickname, "Star of the Wabash."

White Background

The white parts of the flag represent important values. White stands for purity, peace, and honesty. It also shows that Lafayette is the center of government for Tippecanoe County.
