The current flag of New South Wales was officially chosen by the government of New South Wales in 1876.
The flag uses the design of the British Blue Ensign. It has the state badge placed in the part of the flag furthest from the flagpole, which is called the fly. The badge looks like the coat of arms. It is a white circle with a red St. George's cross. In the center of the cross is a golden lion. There is also an eight-pointed gold star on each arm of the cross.
This flag was adopted because the British Admiralty (the main leaders of the British navy) complained. They felt the previous flag looked too much like the Victorian flag.
The state badge was created by James Barnet, who was the Colonial Architect, and Captain Francis Hixson. Captain Hixson was a retired officer from the Royal Navy. They did not explain the meaning of the design. However, it might be a simpler version of the unofficial coat of arms of New South Wales at that time.
Past Flags of New South Wales
New South Wales had its first flag in 1867. This flag was also a British Blue Ensign. It had the letters "NSW" in white placed in the fly. This flag was made because of a new law called the British Colonial Naval Defence Act of 1865. This law said that all ships from colonies should use the Blue or Red Ensign with their colony's symbol on it.
New South Wales then adopted a second flag in 1870. This flag looked very similar to the flag of Victoria. It was another British Blue Ensign with a "Governor's Badge" in the fly. This badge showed the Southern Cross constellation with an imperial crown above it. The main difference between this flag and the Victorian flag was the stars. On the New South Wales flag, the stars were gold and had between five and nine points. Each star had one point facing the bottom of the flag.
