The national flag of Uganda.

The flag of Uganda was chosen on 9 October 1962. This was the special day when Uganda became an independent country, no longer ruled by the United Kingdom.

The flag has six equal stripes that go across it. From top to bottom, the colors are black, yellow, red, black, yellow, and red. In the very middle of the flag, there is a white circle. Inside this circle, you can see Uganda's national bird, which is a beautiful grey crowned crane. This crane is always shown facing the left side of the flag.

What the Flag Colors Mean

The colors of Uganda's flag are very important and have special meanings:

  • Black stands for the people of Africa. It represents the rich, dark soil of the continent.
  • Yellow represents the bright sunshine that Uganda enjoys. It also stands for the country's wealth and happiness.
  • Red stands for the blood that connects all Ugandans. It reminds everyone that they are brothers and sisters, working together for their nation.

The Grey Crowned Crane

The grey crowned crane is a very special bird in Uganda. It is the country's national symbol.
