Flag of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic facts for kids
The flag of the Azerbaijan SSR was the official flag of Azerbaijan when it was part of the Soviet Union. It was first used in 1920. This early flag was red and had a yellow crescent and star in the top left corner.
Later, from 1921 to 1922, the Azerbaijan SSR used a red flag with the yellow Cyrillic letters АССР (ASSR) on it.
In 1937, a golden hammer and sickle symbol was added to the top left corner. Below it, the Latin letters AzSSR were used. A few years later, in the 1940s, these letters were changed back to their Cyrillic version, АзССР.
The very last version of the flag was adopted on October 7, 1952. This flag looked like the flag of the Soviet Union, but it had an extra horizontal blue stripe at the bottom. This blue stripe took up about one-fourth of the flag's height.
