Flat River (South Branch Pawtuxet River tributary) facts for kids
The Flat River is a small river in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It flows for about 8.2 miles (13.2 kilometers). This river is special because it has no dams along its entire length.
Where the Flat River Flows
The Flat River starts in a town called Coventry. It begins when two smaller streams, Sawmill Brook and Pine Swamp Brook, join together. This is called a confluence.
From there, the river flows towards the east. It eventually meets up with another river, the Big River. When these two rivers combine, they form the South Branch Pawtuxet River. This area is now covered by the Flat River Reservoir.
How to Cross the Flat River
Many roads cross over the Flat River as it flows through Coventry. Here are some of the places where you can cross the river, starting from where it begins:
- Maple Valley Road
- Franklin Road
- Hammet Road
- Maple Valley Road (again, as the road might cross it twice)
- Flat River Road, which is also known as Rhode Island Route 117
Smaller Streams Joining the Flat River
Rivers often have smaller streams that flow into them. These are called tributaries. The Flat River has several tributaries that join it before it reaches the Flat River Reservoir.
Some of these important streams include:
- Turkey Meadow Brook
- Negro Sawmill Brook
- Pine Swamp Brook
- Whaley Brook
- McCuster Brook
There are also other smaller streams that flow into the Flat River.
