Flea Valley was once a small community and a place where people looked for gold. It was also known as Flea Valley House. You could find it in Butte County, California.

This old settlement was located high up, about 3,684 feet (1,123 meters) above sea level. It was northeast of a town called Magalia. It was also east of Pulga, which is a Spanish word for "flea." Flea Valley even showed up on maps from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as late as 1897.

Life in Flea Valley

Even though it was a small place, Flea Valley had some important buildings. People living there or passing through could visit a saloon, a grocery store, and a hotel.

The Flea Valley Hotel

The hotel was a central part of the community. At first, a man named Gus Fairbanks ran the hotel. Later, his wife took over the business.

From 1867 until 1907, a woman named Betty Duensing was in charge of the hotel. She kept it running for many years.

What Happened to Flea Valley?

Over time, the gold mining slowed down, and people started to leave Flea Valley. By 1931, most of the buildings were empty and abandoned. Today, Flea Valley is no longer a populated place.
