The Story of Fleener
Fleener was a small community that existed for a short period in California. Many towns like Fleener grew up around important services, and for Fleener, that service was a post office.
How Fleener Got Its Name
The area first had a post office that opened in 1886 and was called the Mud Lake post office. It closed for a bit in 1888 but reopened in 1889. That same year, the post office changed its name to Fleener. This new name was chosen to honor a person named Sam Fleener. Sam Fleener was an early settler and homesteader in the area. A "settler" is someone who moves to a new place to live, and a "homesteader" is someone who claims and lives on land given by the government, often to farm it. The Fleener post office then closed for good in 1893.
