The Fleet and Industrial Supply Center, Oakland was a very important place for the U.S. Navy in Oakland, California. It was like a giant warehouse and shipping center. During World War II, it sent huge amounts of supplies and war materials to Navy ships. These ships were fighting in the Pacific.

A Big Supply Base for the Navy

This supply center started in 1940. The Navy bought 500 acres (about 2 square kilometers) of wet land from the city of Oakland. They paid only $1.00 for it! The Navy then prepared the land and built many large warehouses.

Opening and Growth

The center opened on December 15, 1941. It quickly grew bigger over many years. In the late 1940s, its name changed to Naval Supply Center, Oakland. Later, it was renamed Fleet and Industrial Supply Center, Oakland again. During the Cold War, it was one of the Navy's most vital supply places.

Closing Down

In 1995, a special group called the Base Realignment and Closure Commission suggested closing the center. It finally closed in 1998. In 1999, the Navy gave the entire 531-acre (about 2.15 square kilometers) property to the Port of Oakland.

What Happened to the Land?

The Port of Oakland plans to use the land for moving goods. This will involve ships, trains, and trucks. They want to create a big area where cargo can easily switch between these different types of transport. The site needs some cleaning up because of past activities.

Middle Harbor Shoreline Park

A part of the old supply depot became Middle Harbor Shoreline Park in 2003. Many buildings were removed. The area was cleaned up and new wetlands were created. These wetlands provide a home for local wildlife.
