Flemings was a chain of supermarkets in Sydney, Australia. It was owned by Woolworths Limited, a big Australian company. Today, only one Flemings store is still open in Jannali. Most Flemings stores changed their name to Woolworths Supermarkets starting in the late 1990s.
The Story of Flemings
The first Flemings stores opened in 1930. They were started by Jim Fleming Sr. and George Fleming. At first, they were called "E.L. Lakin". After World War II, their name changed to "Flemings Food Stores". By 1965, there were 55 Flemings stores across Sydney.
The Fleming family kept running the stores for Woolworths for about 10 years. After that, they started a new supermarket chain called Jewel Food Stores.
Changes to Flemings Stores
Many Flemings stores have been updated or closed over the years. For example:
- The Flemings store in Pendle Hill was renovated in late 2009. It then became a Woolworths store.
- The Umina Beach store closed on June 17, 2010. A new Woolworths store opened across the street.
- The Bexley North store closed in 2017. It was changed into a smaller Woolworths Metro store.
