History of Pendle Hill
Imagine Sydney a very long time ago, before big buildings and busy roads. This land was originally home to the Dharug people, who are the Traditional Owners of this area.
Early European Settlement
In 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip and his group camped overnight near a creek, which is now called Pendle Creek. This was just a few months after the First Fleet arrived in Australia.
By 1790, the new colony was struggling to find enough food. To help with this, in 1819, a man named D’Arcy Wentworth was given land here. European settlers began clearing the land to grow crops and raise animals for food. This area was part of his large Darcyville estate.
How Pendle Hill Got Its Name
You might wonder how Pendle Hill got its unique name. It's linked to a man named George Bond (1876–1950). He was an American who came to Australia in 1909 and started a cotton business. The centre of England's cotton industry was in Lancashire, and there's a famous hill there called Pendle Hill. It's thought that this is where the suburb got its name.
George Bond's company, Bond Industries Limited, became very successful. They started making hosiery and knitted clothes, especially during World War I.
Railway and Community Growth
The Pendle Hill railway station opened on 12 April 1924. This made it much easier for people to travel to and from the area. As the community grew, a government primary school opened in 1955, and the first post office opened in 1956. A nearby street, "Purdie Lane," is named after the first postmaster and his wife, who were important early residents.
Maltese Monument
In 1975, a special monument was unveiled at Civic Park in Pendle Hill. This was a gift from the Maltese community in Australia. It celebrates the contributions of Maltese people to New South Wales. Every year, a service is held here to remember "Sette Giugno", which was an uprising in Malta against British rule in 1919. This day is now a national holiday in Malta.
