Discover Fletcher's Cove!

Many people know this place as "Fletcher's Boathouse." It has been a popular spot for fishing and outdoor fun since the 1850s! Imagine how many generations have enjoyed this beautiful area. The oldest building nearby, the Abner Cloud House, dates all the way back to 1802.

For a long time, the Fletcher family ran the boathouse. They were in charge for 145 years! The fourth generation of the family, Ray and Joe Fletcher, retired in 2004. After that, a company called Guest Services Incorporated took over. Even though the area was officially named Fletcher's Cove, many people still call it Fletcher's Boathouse.

Fishing Adventures at Fletcher's Cove

Fletcher's Cove is super famous for fishing, especially in the spring! This is when different types of fish swim upstream from the ocean to lay their eggs.

  • White Perch: These fish arrive first, usually in mid-to-late March. They come from deeper waters to the faster, fresh water of the Potomac River.
  • Shad and Herring: Next, bright fish like shad and herring swim in from the sea. For many years, families would come to catch these fish.
  • Striped Bass: In late April and May, the river fills with striped bass, also known as rockfish. These can be very big, sometimes up to 50 pounds! Many anglers love to try and catch a trophy fish here.
