The Flint Estate is a special group of old buildings in Antrim, New Hampshire. It's like a historic summer home that was put together or built by a person named Wyman Kneeland Flint starting in 1913. These buildings are important because they are some of the few parts left of an old village called North Antrim, which was mostly destroyed by a big fire in 1888. Today, most of the estate is owned by the Maharishi Academy of Total Knowledge.
Exploring the Flint Estate
The Flint Estate is located in northern Antrim. It sits on the north side of the North Branch River.
What Makes Up the Estate?
The estate includes Wyman Kneeland Flint's main house. This brick house was built around 1817. Flint made it much bigger between 1913 and 1914.
There is also the North Branch Schoolhouse, built around 1820. Flint bought this schoolhouse to help fund a new school. It has since been changed into a home. The North Branch Chapel is another building, a wooden structure from about 1877. The Sawyer House, built around 1846, is a simple Greek Revival style home.
Flint used his property as a summer estate. It was also a "gentleman's farm," meaning a farm run for pleasure rather than profit. Later, the estate became part of the campus for Nathaniel Hawthorne College. The college's newer buildings were mostly west of the original estate buildings.
The Story of North Antrim Village
When the area of Antrim was first settled in the 1700s, it didn't have clear town centers. The village of North Antrim grew around a small mill complex. This complex was on the North Branch River. A waterfall there provided power for sawmills and gristmills built in the 1770s.
The village was also near the northern end of the main road through the township. The Keene Road was built through the village in 1834. This road, now New Hampshire Route 31, originally ran along the north bank of the North Branch River. The original Flint house was one of the largest and finest homes in the village at that time. Most of the village, located on the south bank of the river, was destroyed in a major fire in 1888.
