A Grand Marriage

On July 12, 1804, Flora Mure-Campbell married Francis Rawdon-Hastings. He was known as the 2nd Earl of Moira at the time. Her husband later became a very important figure, serving as the Governor-General of India and the Governor of Malta. He also became the Marquess of Hastings.

Together, Flora and Francis had six children:

  • Lady Flora Elizabeth (1806–1839), who did not marry.
  • Hon. Francis George Augustus (1807–1807), who sadly passed away as a baby.
  • George Augustus Francis (1808–1844), who became the 2nd Marquess of Hastings.
  • Lady Sophia Frederica Christina (1809–1859), who married John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute and had children.
  • Lady Selina Constance (1810–1867), who married Charles Henry.
  • Lady Adelaide Augusta Lavinia (1812–1860), who married Sir William Keith Murray.

Building Loudoun Castle

Around 1807, Flora played a key role in the creation of Loudoun Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. She asked a famous architect named Archibald Elliot to design the castle. This grand building became a significant part of her family's history.

A Unique Burial Wish

Flora's husband, Francis, passed away on November 28, 1826, while he was on a ship called HMS Revenge near Naples. Before he died, he made a very special request: he wanted a part of him to be buried with Flora when she passed away. This unique wish was honored, and it now rests with her in their family burial place at Loudoun Kirk.
