Florence Aylward (born March 10, 1862 – died October 14, 1950) was an English composer. She was famous for writing many popular songs called ballads.

Her Early Life

Florence Aylward was born in 1862 in a place called Brede, in East Sussex, England. Her father, Augustus Aylward, was a rector, which is a type of church leader. Her mother was Mary Aylward.

Florence loved music from a young age. She studied at the Guildhall School, a famous music college. She started writing her own songs when she was very young. In fact, her music was played at local concerts when she was only 12 years old!

Her Music Career

Florence Aylward's early songs caught the eye of William Boosey. He worked for a big music publisher called Boosey & Hawkes.

Her very first song was published in 1888. It was called "Day Dawn." The words for this song came from a poem by Victor Hugo. A writer named Alice K. Sawyer translated the poem. The Graphic newspaper said it was a "simple and graceful ballad."

In 1890, a collection of six of her songs was published. These songs were written for a singer with a high voice, called a soprano. The collection was named "Album of Six Songs." It included songs like "The Boat of My Lover" and "The Milkmaid's Song."

Florence Aylward wrote at least 150 songs during her life. About 50 of her songs are listed in a big book about music called Universal Handbook of Musical Literature.
