Florewood State Park, also known as Florewood River Plantation State Park, is a public recreation area in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is currently closed. The park is located near Greenwood, off U.S. Highway 82.

History of Florewood State Park

How the Park Started

Florewood State Park began in 1973. The Moor family gave their land to the state of Mississippi. They wanted the land to be used as a "living historical plantation." This meant visitors could see what a plantation was like in the past.

Changes and Closure of the Park

In 2005, a new idea was brought to the Mississippi Legislature. This is the group of people who make laws for the state. The idea was to sell Florewood Plantation State Park and four other state parks.

An auction company tried to sell the entire park on July 23, 2005. The state wanted to keep the park open for day visits. They planned to have picnic areas for people to enjoy.

However, in 2007, the park was leased to Leflore County. This means the county took over running the park.

Why Florewood Park is Closed Now

As of 2016, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks said the park was "temporarily closed." They mentioned it was closed for "renovation," which means repairs and updates.

The Mississippi Outdoor Digest from 2015-2016 also listed the park as closed. It confirmed that Leflore County was operating it at that time.
