Florida is a small, unincorporated community located in Lafayette Township, within Madison County, Indiana. An unincorporated community is a place that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It's usually a smaller settlement that's part of a larger county or township.
The Story of Florida, Indiana
Florida, Indiana, was first established in the year 1856. It's believed that the community got its name from the sunny state of Florida.
From Post Office to Popular Restaurant
In 1864, a post office was opened in Florida. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed down in 1903.
Later, the community became known as Florida Station. This new name came about because a train station was built there. Interestingly, the train station was located in the very same building that used to be the post office! For a while, it also served as a gas station.
The small train station stopped operating in 1956. After that, the building got a new life once again! It was turned into a restaurant called the Florida Station restaurant. This restaurant became a very popular spot for local people to eat and gather. It stayed open and busy until it finally closed its doors in 1978.
