The Florida Power and Light Company Ice Plant is a special historic building in Melbourne, Florida, United States. People also know it as the City Products Corporation Ice Plant or simply the Ice Plant. You can find it at 1604 South Harbor City Boulevard. On November 17, 1982, this building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important place in U.S. history.
Building the Ice Plant
Work on the ice plant started in December 1926. This was after the city approved its construction. The first guess for how much it would cost was $30,000. However, the final cost to build it was much higher, around $100,000.
What the Ice Plant Did
This plant made ice! At its busiest time, it could produce 50 tons of ice every day. That's a lot of ice! The plant helped people keep food cold before modern refrigerators were common. It stopped making ice in 1977.
Future Plans for the Building
Since it closed, people have thought about new uses for the old ice plant. Some ideas include turning it into a restaurant. Others have suggested using it for offices or even homes.
