History of Floyd
How Floyd Got Its Name
The community of Floyd started in 1882. At first, it was called Oliverea. This name came from an official of the East Line and Red River Railroad, whose real name was Oliver. The railroad was building new tracks from Greenville to McKinney at that time.
In the same year, a post office opened in Oliverea. But the people living there didn't like the name because it was named after a stranger. They suggested the name Foster, but postal authorities said no. Their second choice was Floyd. No one is exactly sure why they picked this name, but some think it was to honor a special messenger from the Texas Revolutionary Army. The name Floyd was officially used by 1887.
Population Changes Over Time
In 1904, about 231 people lived in Floyd. The town's population grew to its largest size, 300 people, just before the Great Depression began.
However, new and better roads were built that favored Greenville, which was the county seat. This meant fewer people traveled through Floyd, and the town started to struggle. The post office closed in the 1930s, and the number of people living there began to drop.
After World War II, only about 150 people lived in Floyd, and just three businesses were still open. By the early 1950s, the population was very small, with only 70 residents. But by the mid-1970s, the population had grown again to 220 people. This was the same number of residents recorded in the year 2000.
