Communities in Flushing Township
Flushing Township is home to a few smaller areas. One of these is:
Brent Creek: A Small Community
Brent Creek is a small community found within the township. It's located on Mt. Morris Road, between Nichols Road and Seymour Road.
A man named Thomas L. L. Brent, who used to work as a diplomat in Spain and Portugal, bought a lot of land here. He decided to settle down in this area. In 1837, his workers built a mill on a nearby stream. This stream was first named Charlotte Creek, after his daughter, but it was later renamed Brent Creek. A post office was opened here in 1888, also called Brent Creek.
History of Flushing Township
The first person to settle in what would become Flushing Township was Rufus Harrison in the fall of 1835. At first, Flushing was part of a larger area called Flint Township. This big area included many other townships we know today.
How Flushing Township Got Its Name
On March 6, 1838, Flushing Township became its own separate area. During a meeting, people suggested naming the township "Dover." However, there was already another Dover Township in Michigan. So, the state government chose the name Flushing instead. The first clerk of the township was Abiel C. Bliss.
In October 1838, the township was divided into five school districts. This helped organize education for the children living there.
Early Settlers and Developments
Thomas L. L. Brent was an important early settler. He arrived before 1836 and bought a very large amount of land, about 70,000 acres (28,000 hectares), in Michigan. He built a saw mill and a dam on the Flint River, but a big flood later destroyed it. This is how the Brent Creek community started.
In the 1840s, a group of settlers from England began to form what was known as the "English Settlement" in the northwest part of the township. The Village of Flushing was also planned out in 1840. Over time, parts of Flushing Township became separate townships, like Clayton Township in 1846 and Mt. Morris Township in 1855. The community of Flushing officially became a village on March 21, 1877.
A Heroic Plane Crash in 1951
On December 22, 1951, a large B-29 Superfortress airplane crashed in Flushing Township. The plane was on a training flight when its engines stopped working. The pilot, 1st Lieutenant Robert Davis Phelps, bravely steered the plane away from houses and people. He died in the crash, but his actions saved many lives on the ground. The other seven crew members were able to parachute to safety.
Modern Water Supply
More recently, on November 27, 2017, Flushing and other nearby towns started getting their water from the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline. This water is cleaned and treated by the Genesee County Drain Commission.
