Foil kite facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A foil kite is a special type of kite that looks a bit like a parachute. It's made of many fabric pockets, called cells, that fill with air when you fly it. This makes the kite puff up and take on a shape like an airplane wing. Because foil kites can create a lot of power, people use them for exciting activities like kitesurfing on water, kite landboarding on land, and even snowkiting on snow! They can also be used to generate energy or just for fun.

Foil kites are flown using different control systems. Some use just two lines, which might connect to rings, wrist bands, or a simple bar. Others use three or four lines, often with a bar or handles that let you control the kite's power more easily. You can learn more about how kites are controlled by looking up kite control systems.

What Makes Foil Kites Special?

Foil kites are designed with many air pockets, or "cells," inside. These cells run from the front to the back of the kite. Some or all of these cells have openings at the front. When the wind blows into these openings, the cells fill up with air, making the kite inflate and take on a special shape called an aerofoil. This shape is very good at catching the wind and creating lift, just like an airplane wing.

Flying on Water

Some foil kites are made to be used on water, like for kitesurfing. These special kites have small air inlets in the middle of their front edge. They also have valves inside that help keep the air in and, hopefully, keep the water out! Small holes between the cells allow the whole kite to inflate evenly. Kites designed for water might take a little longer to inflate than regular foil kites because their air inlets are smaller.

Why Are They So Powerful?

Foil kites are known for being very efficient among all the different types of power kites. Their unique aerofoil shape means they can still create a lot of lift and pull, even when they are directly overhead and not moving much. This is different from other kites, like leading edge inflatable kites, which might lose power when they are parked overhead. This efficiency makes foil kites great for activities that need a lot of steady power.
