The name Foot of Ten comes from its special location. It sits at the bottom of the tenth inclined plane of the Allegheny Portage Railroad.
What was the Allegheny Portage Railroad?
The Allegheny Portage Railroad was an amazing engineering project from the 1830s. It was a special railroad system that helped boats cross the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania.
- Boats would travel along canals.
- When they reached a mountain, they were loaded onto special railroad cars.
- These cars were then pulled up and down steep slopes using ropes and steam engines.
- These steep slopes were called inclined planes.
Foot of Ten was right at the base of the tenth one of these inclined planes, which is how it got its unique name!
