A Look Back: Foote's History

Foote has an interesting history, especially because of a famous old house there.

The Mount Holly Plantation

One of the most important historical sites in Foote is Mount Holly. This is a large, historic plantation house. A plantation was a very big farm, often worked by enslaved people in the past. Mount Holly is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a significant historical place in the United States.

The land where Mount Holly stands was first officially claimed and owned, or "patented," in 1831 by a person named John C. Miller.

Important People from Foote

Mount Holly later became the property of Hezekiah William Foote in the 1880s. Hezekiah Foote was a very wealthy planter, meaning he owned a large farm. He was also an officer in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Beyond that, he was involved in politics, serving as a member of both the Mississippi House of Representatives and the Mississippi Senate. These are parts of the state government that make laws for Mississippi.

Hezekiah's son, Huger Lee Foote, inherited Mount Holly. Huger was also a planter and followed in his father's footsteps by serving in the Mississippi Senate.

A very famous person connected to this family is author Shelby Foote. He was Huger's grandson. Shelby Foote became well-known for his writings, especially about the American Civil War.
