What Was Fort Hamilton?

Fort Hamilton was one of many forts quickly built in Wisconsin during the Black Hawk War in 1832. It was located near a place then known as Hamilton's Diggings, which is now Wiota, Wisconsin.

Even though the war was happening, Fort Hamilton itself was never attacked. However, four soldiers who were part of its defense sadly lost their lives during the war.

What Did Fort Hamilton Look Like?

The fort was like a big, square fence called a stockade. It measured about 40 feet by 40 feet. Inside this fence, there was a strong building called a blockhouse, which was 16 feet by 24 feet.

The fort was also surrounded by a ditch and a fence made of pointed logs called pickets.

Today, a cheese factory called Zimmerman Cheese is located where the fort once stood. There is also a sign there with a drawing of what Fort Hamilton looked like.
