Fort Hill Park facts for kids

Fort Hill Park is a public park that covers about 0.845 acres. It's located in the St. George area of Staten Island, New York. This park sits on the side of the northernmost hill of the Dongan Hills ridge. Long ago, it was known by a different name: Fort Knyphausen.

Fort Hill Park: A Glimpse into History

Fort Hill Park might look like a peaceful green space today, but it has a very important past. It played a role in the American Revolutionary War, a time when the American colonies fought for their independence from Great Britain.

A Fort from the Revolution

During the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Staten Island was a strong base for the British and their supporters, known as Loyalists. In August 1776, General William Howe, a British commander, brought his army to Staten Island.

At the top of what is now Fort Hill, a Prussian general named Wilhelm von Knyphausen (1716–1800) built a special kind of fort. This fort was an "earthen redoubt," which means it was a small, enclosed fort made mostly of earth. It was built to help defend the area. The fort was named Fort Knyphausen in honor of General von Knyphausen. The King's Orange Rangers, a Loyalist military unit, also helped build and defend it.

Defending the Fort

Fort Knyphausen was not just a quiet outpost. In January 1780, General von Knyphausen and his troops successfully defended the fort against an attack by American forces. The fort also served as a starting point for raids against American positions in New Jersey.

After the war ended, the British left Staten Island in November 1783. Fort Knyphausen was no longer needed and was abandoned. Its square base was later used as a reservoir, which is a place to store water.

From Fort to Park

For many years, the land where Fort Knyphausen once stood remained undeveloped. This was partly because of its hilly shape. Eventually, the City of New York bought the property.

On August 2, 2004, this historic spot was officially opened as Fort Hill Park, becoming a public green space for everyone to enjoy. In 2008, the park was improved with the restoration of a blue indigo granite and bluestone capstone wall. A bluestone sidewalk was also added, making the park look even more historic and inviting.

Today, Fort Hill Park offers a quiet place to relax and remember the important events that happened there centuries ago.
