The Fort Peck Agency is like a special office that helps manage the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana. It's part of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which is a U.S. government group that works with Native American tribes. This agency is located near a town called Wolf Point, Montana.

A Look Back: History of the Agency

The Fort Peck Agency helps around 12,000 members of the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes. These tribal members are officially registered with the reservation. The reservation itself is very large, covering about 2,094,000 acres of land.

Within this large area, about 939,165 acres are special trust lands. These lands are held in trust by the government for the tribes and individual tribal members. This includes some public lands that were once part of the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation.

Important Leaders: Agents and Superintendents

The Fort Peck Agency has had many leaders over the years. These leaders, called Agents or Superintendents, were in charge of the agency's work. They helped manage the reservation and worked with the tribal communities.

Here are a few of the early leaders:

  • On September 1, 1882, N. S. Porter was the Fort Peck Indian Agent. He wrote his fourth yearly report to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. This report shared updates on the agency's activities.
  • On August 10, 1883, George W. Wilkinson became the U.S. Indian Agent for Fort Peck. He submitted his first annual report to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs that year.
  • Charles B. Lohmiller served as a Superintendent for the agency from 1904 to 1917.
