Fort Piute facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fort Piute, first called Fort Beale, was a small military outpost. It was built by Captain James Henry Carleton and his soldiers. This fort was located in a desert area, about 2,828 feet (862 meters) above sea level. It was special because it was near where Piute Creek disappeared into the ground. This spot, fed by Piute Spring, created a green, watery area called an oasis in the dry desert. From here, the creek's path eventually led towards the Colorado River.

History of Fort Piute

Fort Piute was like a smaller branch of bigger military camps. First, it was connected to Camp Cady. Later, it became an outpost for Fort Mohave.

Why Fort Piute Was Built

Fort Piute was one of several outposts built a long time ago. Its main job was to protect people traveling along the Mojave Road. This road was an important path for wagons crossing the desert.

Protecting Travelers and Springs

Between 1859 and 1870, there were sometimes disagreements with local Native American people living in the Mojave Desert. The fort helped keep travelers safe. It also made sure that the important water sources, called springs, along the route were secure. These springs were vital for anyone crossing the dry desert.
