The Fort Steuben Mall is a popular shopping center located in Steubenville, Ohio. It's a big, enclosed mall where you can find many different stores. The mall first opened its doors in 1974.

Today, its main stores, also known as anchor stores, are Walmart and J. C. Penney. These large stores help attract shoppers to the mall. The mall is currently owned and managed by a company called Kohan Retail Investment Group.

History of Fort Steuben Mall

The Fort Steuben Mall has been a part of the Steubenville community for many years. When it first opened in 1974, it had popular stores like Sears and Kaufmann's. The Kaufmann's store at this mall was special because it was the first one in their chain to be inside a shopping mall.

The Goodman Company, a real estate business owned by Murray H. Goodman, built the mall. Just one year later, in 1975, the mall grew even bigger. They added 25 more stores and a third large department store called Carlisle's. A jewelry store, Zales Jewelers, even won an award for its design when the mall opened.

Changes Over the Years

In 2000, the mall got a small makeover. Some of the main stores, Sears and Kaufmann's, were also updated. However, over time, some of these original stores closed down. Sears closed in 2016.

Kaufmann's became part of Macy's, but that store also closed in 2017. Even with these changes, JCPenney and Walmart have remained as important anchor stores. In 2017, there were some money problems, and the mall faced a situation called foreclosure. This means a lender might take ownership if payments aren't made.

However, the mall did not close. A year later, in 2018, local groups like the Jefferson County Port Authority started helping the mall. They worked to find new stores and businesses to fill the empty spaces. This shows how important the mall is to the community.
