The Fortunat O. Michaud House is a special old building located at 231 Main Street in Van Buren, Maine. It was built in the early 1900s by a local politician. This house is a great example of Queen Anne architecture, which was a popular style for homes back then. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This means it's officially recognized as a historic landmark!

What Does the Michaud House Look Like?

The Michaud House stands on a high spot near the main street in Van Buren. It's easy to spot at the corner of Poplar and Main Streets. Main Street is actually part of United States Route 1, a big highway!

Main Features of the House

  • Two Stories Tall: The main part of the house has two floors.
  • Hip Roof: It has a roof that slopes down on all four sides, called a hip roof.
  • Round Tower: A cool, round tower with three stories sticks out from one corner.
  • Wrap-Around Porch: A wide porch goes around the front and one side of the house. It has strong columns that look like the ones from ancient Greece, called Tuscan columns.

Special Details

The top part of the round tower is covered in wooden shingles. The rest of the house is covered in flat, overlapping wooden boards called clapboards. The tower has a round, dome-shaped roof on top.

On the north side of the house, there's a part that sticks out with a pointed roof, like a triangle. It has a window that is shaped like a tall, narrow arch, known as a lancet arch.

At the back of the house, there's an extra section that extends out. This part might have been from an older, smaller house that was there before.

Inside, the house still has many of its original wooden details and decorations. It's like stepping back in time!

Who Was Fortunat O. Michaud?

The Michaud House was built between 1912 and 1917 by Fortunat O. Michaud. He was an important person in Maine politics.

Michaud's Role in Government

Fortunat O. Michaud served as a state legislator. This means he was a member of the state's government, like a representative or senator. He helped make laws and decisions for the people of Maine.

History of the House

Records show that a smaller house might have been on this spot in 1911. The back part of the current house might be what's left of that older building. Experts who looked in the attic found clues that support this idea.

After Fortunat O. Michaud passed away, his daughter sold the house. It is now a private home, but it remains an important part of Van Buren's history.
