Fortún's Early Life and Capture
Fortún Garcés was the oldest son of King García Íñiguez. His mother was named Urraca. We do not know exactly when Fortún was born.
His father, King García Íñiguez, wanted to be closer to the Kingdom of Asturias. He tried to distance Pamplona from the Banu Qasi family. This family ruled lands near the Ebro river. King García Íñiguez often fought against the Muslim forces of the Banu Qasi.
In 860, the Emir of Córdoba, Muhammad I of Córdoba, attacked Pamplona. Fortún was captured in Milagro. His daughter, Onneca Fortúnez, was also taken. They were held as hostages in Córdoba.
Becoming King of Pamplona
Later, the castle of Aibar was attacked and destroyed. This led to the death of King García Íñiguez. After his father died, Fortún Garcés was allowed to return home. He then became the new king of Pamplona.
As king, Fortún Garcés tried to get along with the Banu Qasi family. This made some of the nobles in Pamplona unhappy. Fortún often spent time at the Monastery of Leyre.
End of His Reign
In 905, a big change happened. The nobles of Pamplona chose a new king. They picked Sancho Garcés to replace Fortún Garcés.
Sancho Garcés was a respected military leader. He also had strong support from important people. These included Count Raymond I of Pallars and Ribagorza and King Alfonso III of Asturias.
After this, Fortún Garcés went to live permanently at the Monastery of Leyre. He stayed there until he died in 922.
Fortún's Family
Fortún was married to a woman named Auria. They had several children.
Their most well-known child was Onneca Fortúnez. She married Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Umawi of Córdoba. Later, she married Aznar Sánchez. Onneca had three children with Aznar Sánchez. These included Queens Toda and Sancha of Pamplona.
