Fossy Church is an old church from the Middle Ages. It is found in County Laois, Ireland. Today, it is protected as a National Monument because of its historical importance.

Where is Fossy Church?

Fossy Church is located in a quiet, walled graveyard. It is about 800 meters (or 875 yards) southeast of a village called Timahoe. This peaceful spot helps keep the old church safe.

History of Fossy Church

Fossy Church is believed to have been built in the late 1500s. That's over 400 years ago!

Changes Over Time

The church has seen some changes throughout its long history.

  • In 1608, the church was updated and changed. This is called "remodelling."
  • Later, in 1903, some repair work was done to keep the old building strong.

What Fossy Church Looks Like

Fossy Church has a simple, rectangular shape. It has walls that are still standing tall. The parts of the roof that come to a point, called "gables," are also still there.

Building Materials

The church was built using stones that were not cut into neat rows. This style is called "uncoursed rubble." The walls are slightly wider at the bottom, which helps make them stronger. This is known as a "base-batter."

Inside the Church

You can still see openings for doors and windows. In the southeast corner of the church, there is a special stone basin. This basin is called a "piscina." It was used in the past for washing sacred items during church services.
