History and Culture

The Monkey Bar and Grille

On the east side of the Little Miami River, you'll find a place now called the Monkey Bar and Grille. It used to be known as the Train Stop Inn. Long ago, it was a three-story hotel called The Blue Danube. This hotel was right next to the Little Miami Railroad, which is now the bike trail.

The hotel was located at Foster's train stop, near a covered bridge. Trains would travel north and south, while horse-drawn wagons crossed east and west. This is how the area got its original name, "Foster's Crossing."

Ancient History: Fosters Earthworks

Across the river from the Monkey Bar and Grille, on a wooded hilltop, are the Fosters Earthworks. These are ancient structures built by people long ago. In 1890, an archaeologist named Frederick Ward Putnam studied this site. He described it as a "singular ancient work" created by the Hopewell culture.

Putnam discovered that the walls of these earthworks were made with lots of burned stone, earth, and clay. The evidence found here suggests these earthworks were built after the famous Fort Ancient site, which is about twelve miles up the river.
