Fountain Square Tower facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fountain Square Tower was a very tall building planned for Evanston, Illinois. It was designed to be a skyscraper, which is a super tall building. The plan was for it to be built on Church Street in Evanston.

When it was first planned, the tower was going to be 55 stories tall and reach 523 feet into the sky! If it had been built that way, it would have been the tallest building in Illinois outside of Chicago.

What Was Fountain Square Tower?

Fountain Square Tower was a big project that aimed to create a new landmark in Evanston. It was meant to be a mix of different things all in one building.

What Was Inside the Plan?

The building was designed to have several parts:

  • A parking garage, which would even have a special elevator for cars.
  • A very large shopping center where people could go to stores.
  • Luxury condominium residences, which are fancy apartments that people can own.

Changes to the Building Plan

The original plan for Fountain Square Tower faced a lot of discussion and disagreement from people living in Evanston. This is called "public dissent" or "community protest."

Why Did the Plan Change?

Many people in the community were concerned about how tall the building would be. They protested, meaning they spoke up and showed their disapproval. Because of these protests, the developers had to change their plans.

  • First, the building's height was reduced from 55 stories to 38 stories.
  • After even more protests, the height was changed again to its final planned size of 35 stories and 385 feet tall. The developers said it would not get any smaller after that.

What Happened to the Project?

Even with the changes, the Fountain Square Tower project faced many challenges. Construction never actually started.

The building had an unknown completion date, and it seemed like the plan might be stopped completely because of the continued community concerns. The developers had a deadline of 2015 to begin building, or the project would lose its approval. Since construction did not start, the plan was likely scrapped, meaning it was given up.
