History of Fowlkes
Fowlkes was first started in 1882. It was founded by a person named W.P. Fowlkes. Back then, it was called Fowlkes Station.
A year later, in 1883, a railroad line was finished in Dyer County. This railroad was called the Newport News & Mississippi Valley Railroad. It was a very important part of the community. The train tracks went right through Fowlkes.
By 1887, Fowlkes had grown quite a bit. The community had its own school. There was also a Methodist church. People in Fowlkes also used grist mills to grind grain. They also had cotton gins to separate cotton fibers.
