History of Fox Lake Cree Nation

How the Nation Was Recognized

In 1947, the Canadian government officially recognized the Gillam Band. This meant they were seen as an independent band. Two years later, in 1949, their name was changed to the Fox Lake Band.

Honoring the Past

On November 8, 2007, the Fox Lake Cree Nation unveiled a large statue in Gillam, Manitoba. This statue was built to remember the members of the Fox Lake Cree Nation who passed away. These members died during the time when Manitoba Hydro was building projects on the Nation's traditional lands.

They did not live to see an important agreement signed in 2004. This agreement, called an Impact Settlement Agreement, was made between the Fox Lake Cree Nation, Manitoba Hydro, and the Government of Manitoba. It helped to settle issues related to the hydro development.
