François Cheng (born August 30, 1929) is a famous writer, poet, and artist. He was born in China but later became a French citizen. He writes books, poems, and essays in French. He has also translated important French poems into Chinese.
A New Life in France
François Cheng was born in Nanchang, China, in 1929. When he was 19, in 1948, he moved to France. He loved the French language very much. He said that French became the "soul" of his creative work. This language became a very important part of his life.
Early Work and Studies
At first, Cheng studied Chinese poetry and painting. He wrote academic papers about them. In the late 1960s, he worked with a famous thinker named Jacques Lacan. They studied and translated old Chinese texts together. This work helped Lacan with his own ideas. Later, Cheng started writing his own poems in French. After that, he began writing novels.
Awards and Recognition
François Cheng won a big award called the Prix Femina in 1998. He won it for his novel Le Dit de Tianyi, which means "The Tale of Tianyi." In 2002, he was chosen to join the Académie française. This is a very important group in France that protects the French language. He was the first person from Asia to be given this honor. Since 2008, he has also been part of the Fondation Chirac's honor committee.
Family Life
François Cheng married a painter who was also from China. They both became French citizens. They had a daughter named Anne Cheng. Anne was born in Paris in 1955. She also became a scholar and an expert in Chinese studies, just like her father.
