François Cheng (Chinese: 程抱一; pinyin: Chéng Bàoyī) is a famous writer, poet, and artist. He was born in China on August 30, 1929, but later became a French citizen. He writes many books, poems, and essays in the French language. He has also translated important French poems into Chinese.

Life and Work
François Cheng was born in Nanchang, China, in 1929. When he was 19 years old, in 1948, he moved to France. He later became a French citizen.
In 2002, when he gave a speech to the Académie française, he talked about how much the French language meant to him. He said it became a very important part of his creative work and his life.
Early Studies and Writing
At first, François Cheng studied and wrote about Chinese poetry and painting. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he worked with a famous thinker named Jacques Lacan. They studied and translated old Chinese texts together.
Later, François Cheng started writing his own poems in French. After that, he began writing novels, which are longer stories.
Awards and Recognition
François Cheng has received many important awards for his writing. In 1998, he won the Prix Femina for his novel called Le Dit de Tianyi, which means "The Tale of Tianyi".
In 2002, he was chosen to be a member of the Académie française. This is a very special honor in France. He was the first person of Asian background to become a member of this famous group. Since 2008, he has also been part of the honor committee for the Fondation Chirac.
His Family
François Cheng married a painter who was also from China. They both became French citizens and started a family in France. Their daughter, Anne Cheng, was born in Paris in 1955. She also grew up to become a scholar who studies Chinese culture and history.
