François Craenhals (born November 15, 1926 – died August 2, 2004) was a talented Belgian comics artist. He was most famous for creating the comic series Chevalier Ardent and Les 4 As.

His Amazing Comic Journey

François Craenhals was born in Evere, Belgium, in 1926. As a young person, he loved American comics by artists like Alex Raymond and Hal Foster. He even created his first comic, Karan, in the late 1940s. It was similar to the popular Tarzan stories. At the same time, he also drew a medieval knight comic for a weekly magazine called Le Soir Illustré.

Craenhals showed his comics to Tintin magazine. They were so impressed that they hired him as an art director! Slowly, he began creating short comics for the magazine. His first big series, Pom et Teddy, started in 1953. This series was about a boy, a girl, and their pet donkey. The first stories were gentle tales about a circus.

Soon, Craenhals became one of the main artists creating comics for magazines and newspapers. Many other artists joined his studio to help him. He worked for the Averbode magazine Petits Belges. For many years, he also published Primus et Musette in the newspaper La Libre Belgique.

Craenhals was one of the first comic artists to join Hergé at the publisher Casterman. This is where his two most famous series were published:

  • Les 4 As: This was a fun series for younger readers. It followed a group of four young friends (three boys and a girl) on their wild and exciting adventures.
  • Chevalier Ardent (meaning The Brave Knight): This series was more for older readers. It was inspired by Prince Valiant and told the stories of a young knight in the Middle Ages.

Both of these series sold quite well. Chevalier Ardent was also praised by critics for its quality.

In the 1990s, Craenhals moved to Rivières-de-Theyrargues in the south of France. He continued drawing his two main series until he passed away in 2004 in Montpellier.

Awesome Awards!

  • 1976: He won the Best Story award at the Prix Saint-Michel in Belgium.
