Evere is one of the 19 towns that make up the Brussels-Capital Region in Belgium. As of 2022, about 43,608 people live there. The town covers an area of 5.08 square kilometers (about 2 square miles). This means there are around 8,503 people living in each square kilometer. Like all towns in Brussels, Evere is officially bilingual, meaning both French and Dutch are spoken.

History of Evere: From Farms to a Modern Town

Evere's Early Days: A Farming Community

For a long time, Evere was mostly a quiet farming area. This was true until the end of World War I. The town was well-known for its skilled market gardeners. These farmers were pioneers in growing chicory, a special type of leafy vegetable. In French, it's called chicon, and in Dutch, it's witloof.

Evere and the History of Aviation

Between 1914 and 1945, Evere became a key place for aviation in Belgium. Nearby, in the town of Haren, important aviation companies were located. These included SABCA (a company that built airplanes) and SABENA (an airline).

A famous moment happened in 1927. Charles Lindbergh, who was the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean, landed his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, at the Evere airfield. More than 25,000 people came to welcome him!

Evere After World War II: Growth and Change

After the Second World War, Brussels grew very quickly. There wasn't much empty land left for building. This led to Evere's farms disappearing as more buildings were constructed.

From 1968 onwards, the NATO headquarters moved to a former airfield site in Haren. This brought many new businesses to the area. These businesses were mainly in the "tertiary sector," which means they offered services rather than making goods.
