Major General François al-Hajj was a brave Lebanese military officer. He was born on July 28, 1953, and sadly passed away on December 12, 2007. He was known for his important roles in the Lebanese army, fighting to protect his country.
Early Life and School
François al-Hajj was born in a town called Rmaich in southern Lebanon. This was on July 28, 1953. He joined the military academy in 1972. He finished his studies and graduated in 1975.
A Hero in the Army
General al-Hajj had a long and important career in the Lebanese army. He fought against the Israeli occupation in South Lebanon in the 1980s. He also led troops in other parts of the country. From 1988 to 1989, he fought against Syrian forces. These forces were attacking parts of Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War. He also battled against the Lebanese Forces militia.
General al-Hajj led a big army operation in Dinnieh in 2000. He became very well-known as a smart commander. This was especially true during the 15-week operation in 2007. He led the fight against a group called Fatah al-Islam. This fight happened at the Nahr al-Bared camp in northern Lebanon. He was the second-highest officer in the Lebanese army. He was promoted to the rank of major general after he passed away.
His Sad Passing
On December 12, 2007, General al-Hajj was killed in a car bomb attack. This happened in the area of Baabda. Four other people also died in the attack, including his bodyguard. A car with 35 kilograms of TNT exploded as his car drove by. The bomb was set off by remote control.
