Frances Cromwell, Lady Russell was born around December 6, 1638. She was the youngest daughter of Oliver Cromwell, a very important leader in England. Her father was known as the Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Her mother was Elizabeth Cromwell. Frances was baptized in Ely, England, on December 6, 1638.

Frances Cromwell: A Life in History

Frances grew up in the Cromwell family home. When her father, Oliver Cromwell, became the leader of England, her family moved to grand places. They lived in the famous Whitehall and Hampton Court. These were important royal palaces.

Her Marriages and Family Life

Frances had many people interested in marrying her. She even had a link to King Charles II. But she first married Robert Rich on November 11, 1657. Robert was the grandson of a very important earl. Their wedding was a big celebration with many days of parties.

However, their marriage was very short. Robert had been ill when they married. He sadly died just a few months later, on February 16, 1658. He passed away at Whitehall.

Five years later, on May 7, 1663, Frances married again. Her second husband was Sir John Russell. Sir John died in March 1669. Frances then raised their five children on her own. Later in her life, she lived with her sister Mary and Mary's husband, Thomas.

Her Children

Frances and Sir John Russell had five children together. They had three sons and two daughters:

  • Sir William Russell, 4th Baronet (born around 1660, died 1725)
  • Christina Russell (died 1669)
  • Frances Elizabeth Russell (born 1664, died 1733)
  • Maj.-Gen. Rich Russell (born around 1667, died 1735)
  • John Russell (born 1670, died 1735), who became the President of Bengal
