Sir John Russell, 3rd Baronet (born around 1632 – died 1669) was an important figure in English history. He started as a supporter of the King, known as a Royalist. But later, he became a colonel for the Parliament's army. He was known for his bravery in battles like the Battle of Marston Moor. He also fought in wars in Ireland and Flanders during the time of the Protectorate, when Oliver Cromwell was in charge.

Sir John Russell was the first son of Sir Francis Russell, 2nd Baronet. He first supported King Charles I during the English Civil War. Later, he joined the side of Parliament and became a colonel under General Earl of Manchester. He showed great courage and skill in battles.

Sir John's Family Life

Sir John Russell married Frances Cromwell. She was the youngest daughter of Oliver Cromwell, who was the leader of England during the Protectorate. Frances had been married before to Lord Robert Rich.

Sir John and Lady Frances had five children together:

  • Sir William Russell, 4th Baronet (born around 1660 – died 1725)
  • Christian Russell (died 1669), who passed away when she was young
  • Elizabeth Russell (1664–1733), who married Sir Thomas Frankland, 2nd Baronet
  • Maj.-Gen. Rich Russell (born around 1667 – died 1735)
  • John Russell (1670–1735), who later became the President of Bengal in India

Later Life and Death

Sir John Russell passed away in 1669. He was buried in Chippenham on March 24 of that same year. His wife, Frances, lived for many years after him.
