About Her Life
Early Years and Family
Frances Eleanor Ternan was born on August 1, 1835, while her parents were traveling. She was born on a paddle steamer in Delaware Bay, in the United States. Her parents, Thomas Lawless Ternan and Frances Eleanor Ternan, were both actors. They were on a three-year tour of North America after getting married in Edinburgh in 1835.
Frances was the oldest of three daughters who survived. Her father later became the manager of the Theatre Royal in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Her mother was a main actress there. All three daughters, including Frances, performed on stage to show their talents.
Marriage and Career
Frances's younger sister, Ellen Ternan, knew the famous writer Charles Dickens. Thanks to his help, Frances was suggested for a job as a governess (a private teacher) for the child of Dickens's friend, Thomas Adolphus Trollope. Thomas Trollope was a widower, meaning his wife had passed away.
Frances soon married Thomas Trollope, even though he was 25 years older than her. Their marriage happened in Florence, Italy, just five months after she started working as a governess. She became his second wife. This marriage also made her the sister-in-law of the well-known writer Anthony Trollope. She also became the daughter-in-law of Frances Milton Trollope. Frances Eleanor Trollope later wrote a book about her mother-in-law's life and work, titled Frances Trollope: Her Life and Literary Work from George III to Victoria.
Later Life
Frances and her husband lived in Italy from their marriage in 1866 until 1890. Then, they moved back to England. Thomas Trollope passed away in 1892. Frances Eleanor Trollope died on August 14, 1913, in Southsea, England. She had been living there with her sister Ellen.
