Francesc Macià i Llussà (born in 1859, died in 1933) was an important leader in Catalonia, a region in Spain. He became the President of Catalonia. Before that, he was an officer in the Spanish Army.

Early Life and Military Career
Francesc Macià started his career in the army. He rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. This means he was a high-ranking officer.
In 1905, something important happened. Some Spanish officers attacked a newspaper called La Veu de Catalunya. Macià did not agree with this attack. Because he spoke out against it, he had to leave the army.
Working for Catalonia
After leaving the army, Macià focused on politics. He wanted Catalonia to have more freedom.
In 1922, he started a political group called Estat Català. This group wanted Catalonia to become an independent country. This means they wanted Catalonia to be separate from Spain.
Fighting for Freedom
In 1926, Spain was ruled by a dictator named Miguel Primo de Rivera. A dictator is a leader who has complete power. Macià tried to start a rebellion against this dictator.
He planned this uprising in a place called Prats de Molló. However, the French police stopped his plan. Even though the rebellion failed, many people in Catalonia admired Macià for trying. He became very popular.
President of Catalonia
In 1931, Spain became a republic. This was a new government where people had more say. Macià announced that Catalonia was a "Free Catalan Republic."
However, he later agreed that Catalonia would have some self-rule within the new Spanish Republic. This meant Catalonia could make some of its own decisions.
Macià became the President of the Generalitat in 1932. The Generalitat is the government of Catalonia. He served as president until he passed away in 1933. He is buried in the Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona.
