History of Montjuïc Cemetery
The city of Barcelona opened this cemetery on March 17, 1883. It became the main cemetery for the city. Before this, the older cemetery at Poblenou was used.
Barcelona grew a lot during the 1800s. It became a major city in Catalonia and Spain. More people meant a greater need for burial places. So, a spot was chosen on Montjuïc hill. This area was away from new housing developments. The hill's steep slopes give the cemetery a special look. It has winding paths and terraced areas. These areas look out over the harbor and the sea.
The cemetery holds over one million burials. These include ashes and bodies. They are placed in 150,000 plots, niches, and special tombs called mausolea. A company called Cementiris de Barcelona S.A. manages the cemetery.
The cemetery also has one Commonwealth war grave. This is for Private Charles Hill. He was a soldier from the British Army who died in 1941 during World War II.
Art and Design of Monuments
The monuments in Montjuïc Cemetery show different art styles. The earliest ones look like classical or Gothic buildings. Later monuments, from the late 1800s, show the Art-Nouveau style.
In Catalonia, this style is called Modernisme. Many beautiful and unique designs can be seen here. They reflect the art movements of their time.
