Montserrat Roig i Fransitorra (born June 13, 1946, died November 10, 1991) was a famous writer from Catalonia, Spain. She wrote many interesting novels, short stories, and articles.

Montserrat Roig was born in 1946 in Barcelona, Spain. She grew up in a family that valued education and new ideas. Her father was a lawyer and writer. Montserrat was the sixth of seven children. She lived most of her life on Bailén Street in Barcelona.

Her Education Journey

Montserrat started school in 1951 at a local college. When she was 13, she went to Institut Montserrat for her high school studies.

From 1961 to 1964, she studied at the Adrià Gual School of Dramatic Arts. She even acted in several plays! Later, she earned a degree in philosophy and letters from the University of Barcelona in 1968. She completed her doctorate in 1970.

Writing and Teaching Career

In 1970, Montserrat Roig won the Víctor Català prize for her book of short stories, Molta roba i poc sabó... i tan neta que la volen. After this, she focused on writing.

She wrote a series of books about women and Catalan history. These include Ramona adéu (1972) and El temps de les cireres (1977). Ramona adéu tells the stories of three generations of women. El temps de les cireres won the "Premi Sant Jordi de novel·la" in 1976.

Her novel L'hora violeta (1980) showed her strong support for women's rights. She also published L'òpera quotidiana (1982), La veu melodiosa (1987), and El cant de la joventut (1989). Her last book, Digues que m'estimes encara que sigui mentida (1991), was like a personal poem.

Montserrat Roig was part of the Association of Catalan Language Writers. She also taught Catalan and Spanish at universities. She taught at the University of Bristol in England (1972–1973). Later, she taught at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland (1983) and the University of Arizona (1990).

Activism and Journalism

Montserrat Roig was a feminist and believed in social justice. She took part in student protests in Spain during the time of Franco's rule. She also joined other thinkers in a protest at the Montserrat monastery in 1970.

She wrote three books about women and feminism: ¿Tiempo de mujer? (1980), El feminismo (1981), and Mujeres hacia un nuevo humanismo (1981).

Montserrat was also a well-known journalist. She wanted to create a kind of journalism that was smart and supported women's rights. She was famous for her interviews, both in magazines and on TV. Her interviews for the magazine Serra d'Or were later published as books called Retrats paral·lels. She also had a TV show called "Personatges" on Televisión Española.

In 1977, she wrote Els catalans als camps nazis ("Catalans in the Nazi Camps"). This book shared stories from Catalans who survived Nazi concentration camps. It won the Serra d'Or critics' prize. Her book L'agulla daurada ("The Golden Spire") was about the siege of Leningrad during World War II. It won the National Prize of Catalan Literature in 1986.

She wrote daily columns for El Periódico from 1984 to 1989. From 1990 until her death, she wrote for the newspaper Avui. Her columns from Avui were collected in a book after she passed away.

Her Final Years

While teaching in Arizona, Montserrat Roig started to feel unwell. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her last article for Avui was published the day before she died. Montserrat Roig passed away in Barcelona on November 10, 1991, at age 45. She is buried in the Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona.
