Pascual Madoz Ibáñez (born May 17, 1806 – died December 13, 1870) was an important Spanish politician and expert in statistics. He was born in Pamplona, Spain. Madoz played a key role in Spanish politics during the 19th century. He is especially remembered for creating a huge dictionary about Spain.

Pascual Madoz's Early Life and Career
Pascual Madoz started his career in Barcelona. He worked as a writer and journalist. He had big ideas, like planning the construction of the Vielha tunnel. This tunnel would connect different parts of Spain.
Madoz joined the Progresista party. This political group was active during the First Carlist War (1833–1840). He even served in some battles against the Carlists.
Madoz's Political Journey
In 1836, Madoz was elected as a deputy to the Cortes. The Cortes is like the Spanish parliament. He supported Baldomero Espartero, another important political figure. Later, he opposed Espartero.
In 1843, Madoz was briefly imprisoned. He then went into exile, meaning he had to leave the country. However, he soon returned to Spain.
Key Roles in Government
In 1854, Pascual Madoz became the governor of Barcelona. The next year, in 1855, he was appointed as the Minister of Finance. This was a very important job. He helped make big changes, like selling off Church lands. This process is called secularizing. It meant the government took control of lands previously owned by the Church.
After the revolution of 1868, Madoz became the governor of Madrid. Despite his many roles, he was not seen as a major leader. He soon traveled abroad and passed away in Genoa in 1870. His body was later buried in the Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona.
Madoz's Famous Dictionary Project
Pascual Madoz was different from many politicians of his time. In the middle of his life, he created a very important book. This book is still valuable today. It is a geographical, statistical, and historical dictionary of Spain. It also covered Spain's overseas territories.
The full title of this huge work is Diccionario geográfico, estadístico y histórico de España, y sus posesiones de Ultramar. It was published in Madrid between 1848 and 1850. This dictionary provided detailed information about Spanish towns, regions, and resources.
Honoring Pascual Madoz
In his hometown of Pamplona, there is a street named in his honor. It is called Calle de Pascual Madoz. This shows how important he was to his community.
