Francesco Bracciolini (born November 26, 1566 – died August 31, 1645) was an Italian poet from the time of the Late Renaissance. He wrote many different kinds of poems.

A Poet's Life

Francesco Bracciolini was born in 1566 in a noble family in a town called Pistoia, Italy. When he moved to Florence, he joined a group of scholars and artists called the Accademia Fiorentina. Here, he spent his time studying and writing.

Later, he went to Rome and started working for a very important church leader, Cardinal Maffeo Barberini. He even traveled to France with the Cardinal.

After a pope named Clement VIII died, Bracciolini went back to his hometown. But then, his old boss, Cardinal Barberini, became the new pope! He took the name Urban VIII.

Bracciolini quickly returned to Rome. Pope Urban VIII made him a secretary for his brother, Cardinal Antonio Marcello Barberini.

Bracciolini dell'Api

Bracciolini was given a special honor. He was allowed to add a new part to his name, "dell'Api." This means "of the Bees." The bees were a symbol on the Barberini family's coat of arms.

So, he became known as Bracciolini dell'Api. During Pope Urban VIII's time, Bracciolini was quite famous in Rome. He lived there until the Pope died.

After the Pope's death, Bracciolini went back to Pistoia. He passed away there in 1645.

His Writings

Francesco Bracciolini tried almost every type of poetry. He wrote long epic poems, plays, poems about nature (pastoral), songs (lyric), and even funny, silly poems (burlesque).

He is most famous for his poem called Lo Scherno degli Dei, which means The Mockery of the Gods. It was published in 1618. This poem is a "mock-heroic" poem. This means it tells a story like a grand, serious epic, but it's actually making fun of heroic stories.

Another important poem he wrote was a serious heroic poem called La Croce Racquistata, which means The Cross Regained.
