Early Life and Education
Francesco Filippini was born in Brescia, a city in northern Italy, on September 18, 1853. His family was not rich. His father, Lorenzo, worked as a carpenter, and his mother, Silvia Signoria, was a seamstress.
As a young boy, Francesco had to start working early. He first worked as a waiter in a pastry shop. Later, he became a clerk for a notary, which is someone who handles legal documents.
Studying Art
Even though he worked, Francesco also went to a drawing school. This school was at the Pinacoteca Tosio in Brescia. In 1872, the city council gave him a special grant. This money helped him continue his art studies at the school.
A few years later, in 1875, he received more money. This allowance helped him study with a famous artist named Giuseppe Bertini in Milan. In 1879, another grant allowed him to travel to Paris. There, he visited the Salon, which was a very important art show in France.
Life in Milan
From 1879, Filippini started showing his paintings. He exhibited them at the yearly shows of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. He moved to Milan in 1880 and lived there.
Francesco earned his living by teaching art. He taught in schools and also gave private lessons. In 1878, he was made an honorary member of the Accademia di Brera. He passed away in Milan on March 6, 1895.
Artistic Style and Works
When Francesco Filippini was younger, he mostly painted pictures about religion or history. He also painted some portraits of people.
Painting Landscapes
As he grew older, he started to focus more on painting landscapes. These were scenes of nature, like mountains and countryside. He painted the Apennines mountains and the beautiful countryside of Lombardy. He also painted the tall Alps mountains.
Francesco also loved to paint the sea. He created artworks showing the coast near Genoa, Naples, and Venice. His paintings show the influence of an art movement called Scapigliatura. He was especially inspired by the painter Tranquillo Cremona, who was part of this movement.
