Giuseppe Bertini's Life and Art

Giuseppe Bertini started his art journey at the famous Brera Academy in Milan. He learned from great teachers like Luigi Sabatelli and Giuseppe Bisi. In 1845, he won a big award called the Gran premio di pittura dell'Accademia di Brera. He won this prize for his painting about Dante and Fra Ilario.

Bertini was known for painting large, detailed scenes. He created a painting about the Triumphal entry of the allied sovereigns into Milan after the Battle of Magenta in 1859. He also painted amazing frescoes, which are paintings done on wet plaster. These frescoes decorated rooms in important buildings. For example, he painted great historical figures in the home of the Puricelli Guerra family.

His other works include:

  • A painting of Torquato Tasso being introduced to Emmanuel Philibert.
  • Death of St Joseph for a church in Palermo.
  • Assumption of the Virgin for a church in Valmarana.
  • An altarpiece called Vision of St Francis of Assisi for the church of San Babila, Milan.

He also painted for Count Ernesto Turati in Milan. In Varese, he created frescoes for Cavalier Andrea Ponti's house. These showed scenes like Guido of Arezzo teaching children to sing. He also painted moments from the lives of famous scientists and explorers like Volta, Galileo, and Columbus. One of his most important works is the fresco decoration in the Greek-Orthodox church of Trieste. In 1862, he helped paint the main curtain (called a sipario) for the famous La Scala theater.

Bertini and the Poldi-Pezzoli Museum

Giuseppe Bertini was very important to the Poldi-Pezzoli Museum in Milan. He was one of the people who helped start and direct this museum.

Inside the museum's Sala Dorata (Golden Room), you can see three of Bertini's large paintings. The middle painting shows Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. The two paintings on the sides represent Poetry and Music. Bertini also painted decorations on the ceiling of the Dante Room in the museum.

Teaching and Legacy

From 1848 to 1860, Bertini sometimes taught at the Brera Academy. In 1860, the academy was reorganized, and he became a permanent professor. He led one of the two main painting schools there, while Francesco Hayez led the other. Bertini continued teaching until the end of the 19th century.

Many students learned from him, including:

  • Giuseppe Barbaglia
  • Cesare Bertolotti
  • Emilio Cavenaghi
  • Francesco Filippini
  • Andrea Fossati
  • Pietro Michis
  • Lodovico Pogliaghi

Giuseppe's brother, Pompeo Bertini, was also an artist. Pompeo made beautiful stained glass windows, sometimes using designs created by Giuseppe.
